Publications I and II (E)

This study of journalism and yearbook will teach students the basic skills of accurately relaying information and of self-expression through print communication. Students will learn and practice the journalistic skills used in reporting, writing, designing and producing a publication using desktop publishing. Publications I will publish the lower school and mid school yearbooks. Publication II will publish the high school yearbook. Selection of staffers is made by the yearbook advisor and the editors. Teacher recommendation and parental consent are required.

Filmmaking (E)
Students in this course will learn the fundamentals of filmmaking, including pre-production, production and post-production. Students will learn both technical and artistic aspects of making movies and will write and film four short movies over the course of the year. The class will also collaborate to work on one feature film for the year, to be shown at a film festival in the spring. Application required due to limited class space.

 

Broadcasting I and II (E)
These courses teach students how to film, edit, and air daily news broadcasts. Students will learn to anchor broadcasts, as well as supervise the technical production of the daily news. Students will also film commercials and special interest stories related to student body life. Broadcasting I will produce the mid-school news and Broadcasting II will produce the high school news.   Application required due to limited class space.
 
Journalism (E)
Introduction to Journalism will equip the student with the basic understanding and skills needed to focus in a print media environment. During the first semester of class, students will focus on the rise and responsibility of American media. “How to” chapters that follow will allow the student to begin refining their writing techniques. “Gathering News, What is News, Staff Organization, Conducting Interviews, Ethical Responsibilities and Associated Press (AP) news style format” are just a few of the topics that will be covered. During the second semester of the course, students will cover the “beat” of their choice and will focus solely on writing news stories in AP format and posting them to an online website.
 
Photography (E)
This course covers the history of photography, photographic techniques, digital and film photography, color and black & white processes, basic Photoshop skills, alternative photographic processes, composition, presentation and critiquing. We will look at the work of various photographers throughout history as well as present-day artists. Students will be expected to produce photographic images and should have a functional digital camera. There will be reading and writing assignments, but the majority of the work will be projects and shooting assignments. Students will be required throughout the course to have prints made of their work.
