English Courses

(R) connotes a Required course.  (E) connotes an Elective course.

English I (R)
This course is primarily concerned with grammar, literature, research skills and composition.  Parts of speech, sentence types, punctuation and capitalization are emphasized.   In literature, short stories, novels, plays, poems and nonfiction are  read.  Composition  study  stresses  writing  proper sentences, paragraphs and short essays.  Creative writing is always encouraged. Students are guided in reading with discernment by comparing and contrasting the literary truth with God’s truth. Summer reading is required with testing.

English II (R)
This course is an extension of English I with a more advanced study of grammar, literature and reading skills, composition, research and listening skills. Students will be held responsible for using in writing any grammar taught. Proofreading and self-correction will be required. Summer reading is required with testing, and additional selected reading will be assigned during the year.

English III (R)
This course is required of all juniors and will stress a chronological study of American literature. Grammar will be taught on a review basis only, for the student is expected to enter the course with a strong foundation in grammar and composition skills which will be graded through the extensive literature-related writing assignments. The literature study will loosely correspond with the chronological study of American history which is taken concurrently. Summer reading is required with testing. A major paper will be required.

English III Advanced Placement Language and Composition (R)
In Junior AP English Language and Composition, students learn to understand and analyze complex styles of writing by reading works from a variety of authors. They’ll explore the richness of language, including syntax, imitation, word choice, and tone. They’ll also learn about their own composition style and process, starting with exploration, planning, and writing, and continuing through editing, peer review, rewriting, polishing, and applying what they learn to a breadth of academic, personal, and professional contexts. The equivalent of an introductory college-level survey class, this course prepares students for the AP Exam and for further study in communications, creative writing, journalism, literature, and composition.

English IV (R)
This course is the final preparatory class for the college-bound or vocational-oriented student, for all elements of grammar and composition are reviewed and used. Emphasis is placed on composition and correct formal writing, including literature-related essays and themes, the development of British literature from Beowulf to modern writings. The chronological study is taught in conjunction with British and world history. Summer reading is required with testing.

Advanced Placement English IV (Literature & Composition (E)
This course is designed to help the student read more and become proficient in writing about and analyzing what he reads. British literature is still the foundation; however, other selections will be used. The student will be reading approximately eight books a year, doing analysis of short selections, learning literary analysis tools to use, and reviewing Advanced Placement tests questions the last semester. It is not necessary to take the Advanced Placement examination if the student does not so choose. The course will be an invaluable aid in College English. This course replaces Honors English.

Communications (R)
A state requirement at the 10th grade level, this class develops the speaking and personal writing skills expected of an educated adult. This course includes speaking and research skills, study skills, personal and business writing, and an analysis of media and propaganda. Students will also learn to communicate the Gospel message to others. This course is not a substitute for the regular 10th grade English course.
